Miege Romps Huskies, 71-53

Bishop Miege coach Rick Zych left the Stags’ season-opening score on the locker room whiteboard as a not-so-subtle reminder of their disappointing start.

They lost that game at home to the Blue Valley Northwest Huskies by 36 points and were determined to avenge that East Kansas League loss on Friday.

The Stags succeeded with a fast-paced and high-flying 71-53 victory at BV Northwest. It completed a varsity sweep for the Stags, whose girls team survived overtime against the Huskies.

“They beat us 74-38 that first time and had us down by 42 in the fourth quarter,” Zych said. “What does that say about our kids? They came out and showed a lot of guts. I’m real proud of them.”

The young Bishop Miege squad has now won eight consecutive games for an 11-3 record. The Stags start a freshman, a sophomore, two juniors and a senior.

The Stags had a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter, then held the Huskies to just five points in the second. The Stags came roaring out of break with an 11-0 run and kept the lead hovering around 20 points for the remainder of the game.

“We made a pretty good run there and did a good job of handling their press,” Zych said.

Four Stags finished in double figures with Semaj Ray’s 17 points leading the way. Francesco Badocchi added 16, and Bol Bol and Jeremiah Robinson contributed 15 points each.

Darien Jackson led the Huskies with 22 points.
