Lee's Summit wins fifth straight, 55-28

Tigers Turn It up in Second Half, now 5-1

Lee's Summit, on a four game-win streak, looked to push that number to five on Friday night against cross-town rival Lee’s Summit North and play homecoming spoiler

With just under four minutes’ left in the fourth the Broncos would attempt one final drive down the field in hopes of putting one last six-point notch and a PAT on the scoreboard. Broncos’ sophomore Saul Medina would launch a pass down field for an intended receiver, but would be picked off by Tiger strong safety, junior, Caden Perry. That interception would be the nail in the coffin, eventually leading the Tigers to the one-yard line where they would take a respectable knee with 43 seconds left in the game, ensuring Lee’s Summit a blistering 55-28 victory over the Broncos.

A 51-yard interception return by senior cornerback Ronell Jones would be the start of Lee’s Summit's touchdown barrage in the fourth quarter. The Tigers would score two more times in the fourth quarter on TDs from junior Bruce Andrews and senior running back Salvatore Garozzo. The three scored a collective 21 of Lee’s Summit’s overall 55 points, in the fourth quarter.

Lee’s Summit’s senior quarterback Dalton Hill got in on the action in the third quarter scoring the Tigers’ only touchdown of the quarter on a 57-yard run into the endzone.

“Anytime you can come out and score right out of half and get a little bit more breathing room, to lay back and not have to press so much, definitely helps a lot,” Hill said of his TD to put the team up 34-14 with 11:39 to go in the quarter.

The Tigers would surely get to relax, as errors would be the downfall of the Broncos. The Tigers took great advantage of a number of Lee’s Summit North mistakes, converting them into impressive scoring drives. A Broncos punt would turn up blocked by Lee’s Summit senior Zavian Hill and would be recovered in the endzone, leading to a touchdown for the Tigers in the second quarter. Lee’s Summit North would also fumble with under a minute left in the half, leading to yet another touchdown for Lee’s Summit.

“I’m going to be honest with you, that’s every week. That’s our problem,” Broncos’ head coach Jamar Mozee said of his team’s mishaps in the Friday night loss. “We can play with anybody and we do at times, sometimes I think we’re better than some of the people that are beating us, but the score doesn’t show that. It’s just mistakes.”

Despite the high number of faults by the Broncos, there was one bright spot for North helping to push them to their 28-point plateau. Senior running back Tori Hicks shined for Lee’s Summit North recording 112-yards rushing on the game, recording 12 of the Broncos 28 points on the game.

“That’s two weeks in a row that he’s [Tori Hicks] really run hard like that,” Mozee said. “I challenged him tonight on the sideline, because I needed somebody to make some plays. He was doing it, he was fighting.”

The Broncos would have its’ only lead in the first quarter on a 36-yard pass from senior quarterback Caleb Aston to senior wide receiver Cameron Hairston for a touchdown, and extra point by senior Dillon Schreckler, putting Lee’s Summit North up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Lee’s Summit North will take on Blue Springs away next Friday at 7pm, while Lee’s Summit will host Blue Springs South.
