A look around tourney week

Roundup: Tourney Week

Tournament week wraps up with either title games last night, or the final rounds today.

A few notes around the tourneys...

Surpise I

Lee's Summit entered the Culver's Classic as the No. 7 seed, but handled No. 2 Raytown in style, 62-45, to raise a stir around the Metro. The Tigers followed with a 61-57 win vs Ruskin to advance to the final. The road ended in a brickwall to No. 4 Lee's Summit West in the final. The Tigers were due for a rebuilding year, and the Suburban Big 7 is quite a tough league to endure a rebuild. But Lee's Summit has talented underclassmen that should have a solid second half of the year, and a strong 2017-18.

Surprise II

Turner knocked off previously undefeated No. 7 Olathe Northwest, and in style, 63-53. This definitely will be the shocker of the weekend, as the Golden Bears struggled for a win before the holidays, but have played better since. Turner now plays for the championship of the Valley Center Tourney today.

Comeback Kids

Comeback kids: Park Hill South found itself down 67-60 with less than 1:30 left in the first overtime, and held Rock Bridge scoreless to force a second OT. This followed a 10-point comeback against the Bruins in the fourth quarter.

The No. 11 Panthers took control in the second overtime, and went to win the North Kansas City Invitational, 76-70, in 2 OT. Lamel Robinson finished with a game-high 38 points. Park Hill South's young guards continue to be trouble for opponents, and will make a run this year, and really watch out next season.

Bobcat Magic

Some teams can pull out just about anything at home, and Mike McBride could pull 6 kids out of the stands and play with just about anyone anyway. After trailing No. 5 Park Hill at half, the Bobcats held Park Hill to just one point in the third quarter, then lit it up with 23 in the fourth to advance to the Bobcat Invitational final.

Basehor will face familiar foe Hayden, which the Bobcats lost narrowly in Topeka, 54-52. Should be a packed house tonight!

Geiman Da Man

Blue Valley's Tyler Geiman may have topped Grandview's Jordan Lathon (for now) in buzzer-beaters and big shots.

Geiman's half-court shot against Grandview still is shown repeatedly on Spectrum Sports (and may for years), and sent Blue Valley into overtime - and an eventual win in the Saints Classic semis over Free State - with this shot. Video courtesy Shane Jackson.

Barstow Rolls, Gilyard POY

Barstow knocked off host No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas, 78-71, to advance to the finals of the Saints Classic. If you want a battle of point guards in the city, show up to watch the final featuring Jacob Gilyard vs Tyler Geiman at 6 pm.

Gilyard should be hands-down the city's Player of the Year. The Richmond commit is average over 30 ppg, and has led Barstow to being yet again one of Kansas City's top threats in Class 3.

A few were amazed by Barstow's win, but when you have the best senior in the city as a lightning quick point guard who can shoot, anything is possible in a season.

In the opening 810 Varsity event on December 3 in Liberty, Gilyard had a one-on-three against a very solid Free State team. I exclaimed "no chance". In the final 15 feet before the basket, Gilyard split two defenders, then torched the third for a layup.

Gilyard makes the others on the team better, draws defenders and hits players in stride or with the proper pass. Or just drains a 24-footer or floater in the lane.

Meanwhile, coach Billy Thomas may make a case for Coach of the Year in the Metro as well. Graduating two players now at Division I programs and still winning and beating bigger schools, is certainly making a case.

Who knows how far Barstow will go, but with no Porter brothers at Tolton, and well, no other team like Barstow was last year, would it surprise if the Knights returned to the state tourney? Barstow getting beat by Hogan Prep, or going to the state final - either wouldn't be a shocker.

Ballock's 1-on-5 = No Chance

Eudora star and Creighton commit Mitchell Ballock took on an Metro Academy team with the clock expiring and pretty much in-bounding to himself, went the distance 1-on-5 for the game-winner.

No surprises here, and great to see Mitch healthy in his senior season. Hopefully another run for Ballock is ahead - to the Class 4A state tourney in March.

Central, Broncos Rolling

Finally, the CW Stessman tourney turned out to be another feather in the cap for the surprises of 2016-17. Well, maybe not a surprise to their teams, but Center (third-place), Lee's Summit North (on a roll after the holidays) and St. Joe Central (a top 10 Metro team) continue to win with 2 or 3 wins in the tourney.

Center is a nice pick to come out of Kansas City in the playoffs, as the Yellowjackets opened the year with a win over Barstow, but took third place in the Holiday Classic at William Jewell and also at the Stessman Classic.

Lee's Summit North beating Park Hill in early January was the buzz of the weekend entering the Best of the Midwest Showcase, Session I, where it then took No. 2 Blue Valley Northwest to the final four minutes. The Broncos style presents problems, and on a hot shooting night, can beat anyone in the city.

Central's guard tandem is tough for opponents, and as mentioned earlier with Jacob Gilyard, now with two strong point guards can lead the Indians a long way - including titles in the Jewell and Stessman.
