11-Year Coach, D.C. to Oversee Bulldogs

The Kearney School District Board of Education approved Josh Gray, Kearney High School physical education teacher, for the 2017-2018 head football coach position.

Gray has spent the past 11 years teaching and coaching for Kearney High School. He has served as the varsity football defensive coordinator and the assistant summer weights coach throughout that time. He has also been the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the past seven years.

Kearney High School Principal, Dave Schwarzenbach, stated, “I’m excited to welcome Josh Gray as the head varsity football coach. Coach Gray has been an integral part of a program that has experienced a lot of success, and I believe Kearney football has a bright future under his leadership.”

With 21 years of experience in coaching, Gray has a lifelong passion for athletics. Gray began his first coaching position in Maquoketa, Iowa. For two years he was the football defensive coordinator, head track coach, and head freshman wrestling coach. He moved on to a five-year career as a multi-sport coach for the North Kansas City School District. His coaching duties included varsity football defensive coordinator and offensive line coach and assistant track coach. He spent two years in Odessa as the varsity defensive coordinator, middle school athletic director, middle school assistant wrestling coach and middle school head track coach. In 2005, Gray started his journey in Kearney when he was offered a physical education teaching position at Hawthorne Elementary.

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the Kearney football program. The way the community supports the schools here in Kearney is second to none,” said Gray. “We will relentlessly work to represent this community in a positive way, and I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the tradition of Kearney football.”

Gray attended Northwest Missouri State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. He also holds a Master in Art of Teaching and a Master in Educational Technology from Webster University.

He and his wife Mindy have two children, Hunter and Beau.

Gray will start his new role at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. He replaces Greg Jones who recently resigned to pursue a position with another district.
