Thoughts, highlights and more of Friday's action!

GAME OF THE NIGHT

One of the biggest storylines of the night undoubtedly is Free State's win over Park Hill. Which on paper, isn't a total shocker - the No. 1 team in Missouri loses on the road about an hour away at the now No. 1 team in Kansas.

However, with the Suburban's League dominance in the two years (20-2 in the series), it does open the eyes a bit. And with Free State in the western side of the KSHSAA Class 6A bracket, a possibility for an all Metro area state final is highly possible.

Park Hill hurt itself with not one, but two 60-yard touchdown passes from Billy Maples to Ronnie Bell called back due to ineligible man downfield. Ouch. Reports were that six such penalties were called on the Trojans during the night. Either some tic-tac calls, or keep your feet in cement as a lineman and stay put.

And the penalties hurt Park Hill short-term in the rankings, but also in the record books as Maples and Bell entered on pace to break the MSHSAA single-season marks for touchdown passes and receptions, respectively. They'll get more opportunity this week against Lee's Summit West, as the Titans gave up 35 points across town in Lawrence to the Lions.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Speaking of that game, Player of the Night goes to running back Phillip Brooks. Brooks dashed for 342 rushing yards and 5 TDs, along with 42 via air and another TD for a ridiculous 384 total yards and 6 touchdowns. Brooks will move up the 810 Varsity Player of the Year charts for sure. He got it going on the first player, below:

PRICE IS RIGHT

The North Kansas City district teams enjoyed a 4-0 night, which is impressive considering North Kansas City and Winnetonka entered winless. Tonka's was even more painful as the Griffins went overtime in a SCORELESS game with Shawnee Mission South. Meanwhile, Clyde Price went beserk at Leavenworth, running wild for 247 rushing yards and four TDs, plus a 95-yard kickoff return. Overall, 342 all-purpose yards and Price remains the Metro leader in rushing yards. As for individual awards, it may be tough for Price to be in the Player of the Year awards with Northtown likely to muster 2-3 wins for the year. But if Price leads the Metro in rushing and touchdowns, will be hard to ignore for sur. As a 6-foot, 210 pound junior, Price may be warming up for a big senior year as well with accolades and getting college looks.

Watch the kickoff return below:

PUTZ SET KANSAS CAREER RECORD

Bishop Miege's Carter Putz set a Kansas state record with 93 career touchdowns, breaking Silver Lake's Shannon Kruger's mark of 92 (1994-97) with a 98-yard touchdown strike to Daniel Jackson, and putting the game away, 20-7, over rival St. Thomas Aquinas.

Putz already owns the single-season record (50) for passing touchdowns, and looks to break the career passing yardage mark by season's end.

KEARNEY WELCOMES BACK JONES - WITH A LOSS

Kearney pushed past Liberty North late, for a 15-14 win to improve to 4-1. And notably, over Greg Jones in his return to the field he coached on for so long. As proven with the local powerhouses, a coaching change can happen, but the program and tradition roll forward as the Bulldogs look to enter the Top 10 in the 810 Varsity rankings.

PREDICTION MACHINE PICKS BIG SURPRISE - AGAIN

For the second straight week, the 810 Varsity Prediction Machine picked the No. 7 team in Missouri Class 6 to lose. Last week, 810 Varsity correctly picked a then winless Lee's Summit team to beat a 3-0 Rock Bridge team. Last night, it was Raytown South topping an undefeated William Chrisman, No. 7 in Class 5, 30-21, with 16 unanswered in the fourth quarter. A Landon Montgomery  9-yard pass to Deon McKinney tied the game, a safety took the lead, and then Jamaun Booker's 22-yard breakoff to the end zone sealed the deal for Ray South.

Meanwhile Chrisman's big start hits a tough run with Ray South, Fort Osage and Staley in 3 of 4 games.

AFTER FURTHER REVIEW

The broadcasting crew during the Bishop Miege vs St. Thomas Aquinas game misfired on questioning officiating during the game, saying there was a fifth down. However, the following occured:

Bishop Miege had a 1st-and-10 on the 15 yard line. Aquinas was called for pass interference on first down, penalty goes to the 7 1/2 yard line and repeat first down.

The chain gang moves assuming it is now 1st and goal

Reality is, 1/2 the distance is the penalty, it is now on the 7.5 yard line, 1st down and 2.5 yards to go.

Next play, Miege gets to the 2 yard line for a first down. The announces call it as a second down.

From there, the first play at the 2 is stopped. The wing official at the bottom of the screen comes in and has 2 on his hand.

The scoring play is 4th down, not a fifth down.

NORTHLAND SHOWDOWN AHEAD

Big Northland matchup next week, set up by surges on Friday. Platte County found itself down, 14-0, to Belton, but PC outscored Belton, 31-7, en route to 44-28 win.

The Pirates (4-1) will host Liberty, which remained undefeated after finding itself down at half, 13-7. But the Blue Jays also hit the gas pedal with 27 unanswered in the second half for a 34-13 rout.

Tip of the hat:

MISSOURI

Blue Springs South is starting to figure it out, and will be dangerous over the next month. The Jaguars got it going on both sides of the ball in a 50-7 win. Offense hasn't been an issue all year, and if the defense can gel, the Jags will be tough to reckon with ahead.

Lee's Summit North and Lee's Summit, each notching wins. The LSR7 district rolling up a nice 3-0 night.

Truman getting off the donut, getting its first win over rival Van Horn, 22-21.

Park Hill South with its second straight win, and a nice one over No. 19 Raytown, 19-15. The Panthers had to come back to get it done too.

Oak Park winning its second straight with an easy one over Ruskin.

KANSAS

DeSoto with a statement in a battle of Top 10's in Class 4A, 41-0, over Louisburg.

Basehor-Linwood, the No. 2 Class 4A in the 810 Varsity Kansas rankings, has outscored foes 173-0. Yes, that's right.

St. James Academy now 3-0 for the year, and should be 4-0 next week vs Blue Valley Northwest.

Blue Valley, for its late rally in a 34-33 win over Blue Valley North. The Tigers now sit at 2-1 and feeling much better after its opening loss at Miege.

Aquinas, despite the loss, looks to maybe have lost its last game. The Saints held Miege in check for most of the night, even without the services of safety Jayden Russell. St. Thomas Aquinas should be the favorite on the East side of 5A - though Mill Valley will have something to say, as the Jags won their second straight on Friday night.

SM North notching its first win at Lansing.

The Lancers likely lost their last regular season game. A narrow loss to Rockhurst shows SM East is ready for another long playoff run, and East and Free State don't match up in the regular season. A Thursday night tilt vs Lawrence looks to be the only speed bump ahead.

Clint Rider earned his first Class 6A win with a late night win over BV West, 35-28, at the back end of a Friday night doubleheader at Switzer.
