Delaney, Diener, Sherman move onwards

The next Sunflower League football coaches meeting may take a few minutes for name tags and introductions.

Just moments after the 2017 season has wrapped for the league's teams in the Kansas playoffs, a few head coaches have elected to resign. Some as no surprise, some as a shocker throughout the Metro.

SM EAST

None a bigger surprise than the resignation of Shawnee Mission East's Dustin Delaney, as reported by the Shawnee Mission Post. Per the Shawnee Mission Post, Delaney resigned as "mounting frustrations with administration of the athletic programs in the Shawnee Mission School District factored heavily into the decision."

Delaney exited after five seasons, including taking the Lancers to consecutive state title games, culminated by the 2014 state championship over Hutchinson. Delaney concluded with an impressive 52-8 mark while at East.

OLATHE NORTHWEST

The man he replaced at East - Chip Sherman - also announced this past week his retirement from the Olathe Northwest head coaching post. The Ravens enjoyed two winning seasons in the first two years, finishing 18-19 overall in his tenure.

GARDNER-EDGERTON

Another long-time coach stepped aside as Marvin Diener stepped after 12 seasons at Gardner-Edgerton, which joins the Sunflower League next year. Diener finished with a 73-53 overall record, including a three-year span in 2008-2010 of 33-4 with a trip to the Kansas Class 5A state championship game. Diener arrived to GEHS after winning six state titles at Salina Central.

OLATHE WEST, LAWRENCE - The Knowns

A couple new coaches also will be walking the sidelines in the Sunflower League in 2018, as T.J. O'Neill will be the first-year head coach at Olathe West, making its football debut as a new program. Lawrence's Dirk Wedd announcement his retirement before the season and LHS has yet to name his successor.
