Longtime Kansas coach departs after 35 years

After a historic coaching career at Leavenworth High School, Coach Larry Hogan will not be returning as the head coach of the Pioneers for the 2018-19 season. 

In his 35 years as the Head Varsity Coach at Leavenworth High, Coach Hogan leaves with a career record of 453-323 (71%) He was selected to the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame In 2016. Hogan was a three time Sunflower League coach of The Year, Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Coach of The Year and National Federation of State High Schools Association Coach of The Year. Additionally Hogan was selected as The Eddie Ryan Award Coach of The Year. In 1997, he was selected as Coach for the Greater Kansas City High School All-Star Basketball Game. 

During his tenure Coach Hogan's Pioneers were the 2000 Kansas 6A State Champions. He took the Pioneers to 10 Kansas 6A State Tournaments with 5 Final Four Appearances. His teams won 6 Sunflower League Championships. The Pioneers won prestigious tournaments such as the KCK Tournament, the Coffeyville Interstate Classic and the Leavenworth CNB Tournament. Hogan led teams were also invited to play in nationally acclaimed events such as The Bass Pro Tournament and the St. Louis KMOX Shootout.

He was instrumental in the development of 17 Division 1 basketball players (2 were academy appointments) including a consensus All-American and NBA first round draft choice, NAIA Player of the Year, All Time Men’s Collegiate Scorer in the State of Kansas and Kansas Sports Commission Athlete of the Year. Another of his many outstanding players is a current men's Division 1 Head Basketball Coach. In addition to these 17, Coach Hogan sent numerous players onto success at NCAA Division 2 and 3, NAIA and junior college programs.

Coach Hogan was a loyal and dedicated educator, both in the classroom and on the court, his entire career at Leavenworth High. Coach Hogan was committed to the Leavenworth community making Leavenworth his home after graduating from The University of Kansas.
