Guardians look to take next step in 2018

As with any first-year program, St. Michael the Archangel endured its growing pains in 2017. Now, the Guardians aim to get moving forward in 2018.

The Guardians sustained an 0-9 campaign in the inaugural year, but the schedule lightens this year with foes on the same level as St. Michael the Archangel.

"We've revamped our schedule in an effort to play more teams that fall into our classification, but will still provide the appropriate level of competition for our program to grow," said head coach Kevin Page.

The Guardians return quarterback Alec Alaiwat, a 5-foot-9 senior. As a junior, Alaiwat threw for over 500 yards on just 90 passes.

Nathan Luke, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior, will line up at running back. Caleb Baker, a senior wide receiver, and Brandon Lane, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior tight end, will be targets on offense. Senior Steven McFeders will also make plays on offense.

"We have some returning lettermen who worked really hard this offseason.

Travien Goodman, a 6-foot-2, 260-pound junior, will anchor the lines on both sides of the ball.

"Travien's a returning starter looking use his great footwork and an increased commitment to the weight room in order to create a more physical presence for St. Michael in the trenches."

Lane also will be a staple on defense at end.

"Brandon has had a great summer competing at camps throughout the midwest," Page touted.  "He's a dynamic athlete that is getting on the radar of many schools. He fought injury last year, but looking to really take a big step forward this season."

Page, who came from Raytown before starting the St. Michael program, sees progress and ability to turn the corner in 2018.

"The gratitude and the joy of starting a new program can't be overstated.  It's been a challenge, but one that we are all embracing and working hard to improve upon," Page said. " We expect to show an increase in numbers in the program, as well as growth in all 3 phases of the game."
