After a promising second half of 2017, Olathe North looks to get things going again this year.

The Eagles (7-4 in 2017) return a solid cast from a team that won six straight games during the season before eventually losing to Blue Valley in the playoffs.

Leading the way will be a talented backfield of senior running back Daymonn Sanchez (6-foot, 175). Sanchez rushed for 1,075 yards, at 8.4 yards per carry, and 10 touchdowns last year, while adding 230 receiving yards and two scores.

Sanchez also returned a punt and a kickoff (99 yards) each for a touchdown as well. Sanchez earned honorable mention all-state honors in 2017.

“Daymonn has evolved into a big threat for us,” said Olathe North head coach Chris McCartney. “He’s fast, explosive and has great elusiveness.”

Also flourishing as just a freshman is Arlund Bruce, who will see time at both running back and quarterback. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound sophomore ran for 843 yards and five touchdowns in 2017.

On the outside, senior Devin Stoker (5-foot-9, 185) will be a threat at receiver.

While we don’t have great size, we are fast and strong,” commented McCartney. “We have a lot of kids with playing time.”

Defensively, Stoker also leads the way at defensive back, notching two interceptions and two block kicks as well as 38 tackles.

Up front, seniors Matt Burks (6-0, 245) and Matt Martin (6-foot-3, 220) both return on the defensive line. Fellow senior Jasper Earls (5-foot-1, 215) will lead the way at linebacker.

“Burks brings good quickness, and is strong and smart,” McCartney touted. “Martin has great speed and athleticism. Jasper also has good speed and is tough.”

After its 1-3 start in 2017, Olathe North looks to get things going earlier in 2018. A trip to face Columbine on September 21 will be a big game in the middle of the season.

We hope to go into the season with a better idea of what it takes to be successful,” said McCartney. “We return a lot of kids that played last year.  We hope our work in the weight room and on the field will help us through when things get tough.”
