Olathe North

Olathe North made a statement on Friday - both in its backyard and across the Metro.

The Eagles opened with a 49-20 win over crosstown rival Olathe East on the season's opening night at College Boulevard Athletic Complex.

North (1-0), ranked No 22 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, ran wild with 506 rushing yards, led by Daymonn Sanchez with 192 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Arland Bruce IV also added three touchdowns of his own, along with 133 rushing yards and 42 passing.

Sophomore Jarrett Kendricks wasn't too shabby either, adding 63 rushing yards and a score.

"We really got things going on the ground and were clicking from the outset," said Olathe North coach Chris McCartney. "Our line took care of business, and our backs took advantage. It's a very good way to open the season."

Olathe East briefly, as the Hawks (0-1) countered Sanchez's first score with a 52-yard touchdown run for a 7-6 lead in the first quarter. But Bruce started finding the end zone, as the 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore capped a scoring drive with a 1-yard plunge, and a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Bruce IV ended two more first-half scoring drives with touchdown runs of 6 and 8 yards, as Olathe North enjoyed a 28-7 halftime lead.

The Eagles will take on Shawnee Mission North next week, a 23-0 victim to Shawnee Mission South.

Olathe East will travel to Free State, No. 2 in Kansas.
