Wildcats overcome 12-0 deficit, win at BV Northwest

For a quarter, it looked like the woes for Harrisonville would continue again, this time in Kansas.

Then the young Wildcats came of age, overcoming a 12-point deficit en route to a 29-24 win at Blue Valley Northwest on Friday night.

Harrisonville (1-2) had sustained big losses to Kearney and Maryville, both ranked in the top 5 in Missouri in Class 4 and Class 3, in its first two games. But the Wildcats ground game got going in the second half as HHS outscored BV Northwest, 23-6, for its first win of the year.

“Getting that first win was big for our kids,” said Harrisonville coach Brent Maxwell. “We knew with our schedule that it could be a tough start, but it’ll make us better as the season goes and we saw some of that in the second half.”

The Huskies scored early on a three-yard Edward Thomas touchdown and a Sam Sliefert two-yard dive, for a 12-0 lead

Harrisonville marched right down the field behind a huge running attack, then finished off with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Landon George to Kennedy Atkinson to get the Wildcats on the board, 12-6, which turned out to be the halftime deficit.

In the second half, both teams came out on the attack.

First for Harrisonville, freshman running back Jace Reynolds went off left tackle for 33 yards and a touchdown to tie the game. A successful two-point conversion gave the Wildcats their first lead of the ballgame,14-12.

Northwest would respond in three plays finished off with by Thomas, a junior running back, who darted for a 77-yard touchdown run along the Blue Valley Northwest sideline, and an 18-14 lead.

Harrisonville would call their response and raise them one as they marched down the field in two plays, capped off by a 65-yard Jayden Wilson run to give the Wildcats back the lead, 22-18.

After a failed 12-play, 68-yard Northwest drive inside the Harrisonville 10, the Wildcats would turn around and go 14 plays, 86 yards for a score. Colby Knowles the beneficiary of the Landon George pass on 4th and goal to make it 29-18.

Huskies' quarterback Sam Sliefert would lead Blue Valley Northwest back down the field and find Evan Ranallo for a 10-yard touchdown to cut the Harrisonville lead back to five, 29-24.

Harrisonville’s Kyron Beavers sealed the game with an interception to stop the Huskies, who will host St. Thomas Aquinas next Thursday. Harrisonville will host Battle next Friday.
