Long-time Huskies coach will lead East Team in legendary game

Blue Valley Northwest's Ed Fritz will coach the McDonald's East All-Star Team this March in Atlanta.

Ed Fritz has coached in some big-time games over his career at Blue Valley Northwest. Four Kansas state championships and more.

But none bigger in the spotlight than the McDonald's All-Star Game.

Fritz has been named as the head coach of the McDonald's East All-Stars, held this year on March 27 in Atlanta.

The All-Star Game, which started in 1978, has featured the likes of Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neal and LeBron James - basically every great player over the past few decades.

"It's a thrill to be selected for the top high school game of the year in the country," said Fritz. "State championships have meant more for me because of our kids and school, but to coach the McDonald's All-Star Game is pretty neat."

Fritz will be joined on the sideline by BVNW assistant Luke Laser, and Brett Flory of Derby High.

Among the East roster will be two Duke commits (Vernon Carey Jr., Wendell Moore) and many other future stars. A familiar foe will be on the West squad in former Bishop Miege star Jeremiah Robinson-Earl.

"There's not much I'm going to tell them besides handing them a towel or water bottle," Fritz said. "The best way to coach is to clap and let them play."

One of Fritz's current players - senior Christian Braun - was on the national list of candidates to play in the game. But the Kansas commit wasn't selected for the team.

"I'd rather Christian have been selected than me coach," Fritz said. "It would've been really memorable if it all worked out with him playing."

The boys McDonald's All-American Game can be watched on ESPN2 at 6 pm on Wednesday, March 27.
